Adventure Sports in Nepal: Rafting, Paragliding, Bungee and More

Paragliding over Phewa Lake with Annapurna mountains, Pokhara Nepal

Nepal is best known for trekking — and rightly so. But the same geography that produces the world’s highest mountains also produces some of its best rivers, deepest gorges, and most dramatic launch points for everything from paragliding to bungee jumping. If you’re adding days to either side of a trek, or building a trip around something other than walking, here’s what Nepal does well beyond the trails.

1. White Water Rafting in Nepal

Rafting on a Nepali river through a mountain gorge

Nepal’s rivers drop fast from the Himalayas through narrow gorges, which makes for some of the most varied white water in the world. The options range from easy half-day floats to multi-day expeditions through remote river valleys.

Trishuli River — the most accessible option from Kathmandu. A half-day or full-day trip with Grade 3–4 rapids, suitable for first-timers. Easy to combine with a Chitwan National Park visit.

Bhote Koshi River — the most intense day option. Grade 4–5 rapids in a tight gorge, about 3 hours from Kathmandu. Not for beginners. The same area has Nepal’s best bungee jump if you want to combine both.

Sun Koshi River — the best multi-day option. A 9-day expedition through remote river valley with camping on sandbanks, Grade 3–5 rapids, and almost no road access along the route. One of the best multi-day river trips in Asia.

Best season: October–November and March–May
Duration: Half-day to 9 days depending on river
Difficulty: Grade 2 (Trishuli easy sections) to Grade 5 (Bhote Koshi)
From Kathmandu: Trishuli 2–3 hrs, Bhote Koshi 3 hrs

2. Paragliding in Pokhara

Tandem paraglider over Phewa Lake with Annapurna range behind, Pokhara Nepal

Pokhara’s paragliding is genuinely world-class — not just by Nepal standards but globally. You launch from Sarangkot above the city, glide out over Phewa Lake, and have the entire Annapurna range filling the horizon in front of you. Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain) is directly ahead at 6,993m. On a clear morning it’s one of the more remarkable views you can get from the air anywhere.

All commercial flights are tandem — you fly with a certified pilot and no experience is needed. Flights typically last 25–45 minutes depending on thermals. The best conditions are morning flights, which book up fast in peak season (October and March–April).

Best season: October–November and February–May (morning flights)
Duration: 25–45 minutes in the air, half day total
Experience required: None — tandem with a certified pilot
Location: Pokhara (5–6 hours from Kathmandu, or 30-min flight)

3. Bungee Jumping in Nepal

Bungee jumping over a Nepali gorge

Nepal has two standout bungee locations, both among the highest jumps in the world.

The Last Resort, Bhote Koshi — a 160-metre jump from a suspension bridge above the Bhote Koshi gorge, 3 hours from Kathmandu. The gorge setting makes it one of the most dramatic bungee locations anywhere. Combine it with a Bhote Koshi rafting day for a full adrenaline itinerary.

Kushma Bungee — one of the world’s highest bungee jumps at 228 metres, from a suspension bridge above the Kali Gandaki gorge in western Nepal. Closer to Pokhara than Kathmandu, making it a natural add-on for anyone spending time in the Annapurna region.

Best season: September–May (avoid monsoon)
Duration: Half day
Height: 160m (Last Resort) / 228m (Kushma)
Weight limit: 40–120kg at most operators

4. Mountain Biking in Nepal

Mountain biking on high altitude trails in Nepal

Nepal’s terrain works as well on two wheels as on foot — sometimes better. The Kathmandu Valley has a network of ridge trails with views into the Himalayas. The Annapurna region has dedicated biking routes including a popular downhill from Sarangkot. The Mustang plateau in northern Nepal offers some of the most remote and visually dramatic biking anywhere in the world.

Kathmandu Valley trails — day rides to Nagarkot, Chandragiri, or Shivapuri with Himalayan views. Good for a rest day from the city or an add-on before or after a trek.

Annapurna circuit by bike — the lower sections of the Annapurna Circuit can be ridden, and the Thorong La descent on the western side offers a long, technical downhill through dramatic landscape.

Mustang — remote, high-altitude plateau biking with Tibetan-influenced villages, restricted area permits, and terrain unlike anywhere else in Nepal. Best suited to experienced riders with high-altitude tolerance.

Best season: October–November and March–May
Duration: Half day (Kathmandu day rides) to 14+ days (Mustang)
Difficulty: Easy to expert depending on route
Bikes: Quality bikes provided on all MountainKick guided rides

5. Canyoning in Nepal

Canyoning down a waterfall in Nepal

Canyoning — abseiling, sliding, and jumping down waterfalls and canyon walls — is one of Nepal’s less well-known adventure options and one of the most rewarding. The gorges around Kathmandu and Pokhara have pristine canyon systems that stay cool even in warmer months, making this a good option for trekkers spending time in the valley before or after a high-altitude trip.

Most trips near Kathmandu or Pokhara are half-day or full-day. No prior experience is required — routes are graded by difficulty and guided throughout. The combination of waterfall abseils, natural slides, and plunge pools makes it a completely different physical experience from anything else on this list.

Best season: March–May and September–November
Duration: Half day to full day
Experience required: None
Location: Near Kathmandu or Pokhara

How to Combine Adventure Sports with a Nepal Trek

Most of these activities work well as add-ons to a trekking itinerary rather than standalone trips. Here are the most natural combinations:

EBC or Annapurna trek + Pokhara paragliding — fly into Kathmandu, do your trek, travel to Pokhara for 2 nights, paraglide on the morning of day 2, fly home from Pokhara. Clean itinerary, no backtracking.

Kathmandu arrival day + mountain biking — if you arrive a day or two before your trek starts, a Kathmandu Valley ridge ride is a good way to acclimatise lightly and see the valley. Better use of time than sitting in Thamel.

Bhote Koshi rafting + bungee — the Last Resort runs both activities on the same day. Add it as a final day before your international flight if your departure is in the evening.

Chitwan National Park + Trishuli rafting — Chitwan is on the Trishuli River corridor. A multi-day Trishuli rafting trip ending at the park entrance is a popular add-on for trekkers wanting to see wildlife after altitude.
