Nepal Cultural Safari Tour: Kathmandu, Pokhara, Lumbini and Chitwan

Nepal covers a lot of ground in a small area, and this 8-day tour is built around that fact. You visit four destinations that represent different sides of the country: the UNESCO heritage temples of Kathmandu, the Himalayan lake views of Pokhara, the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Lumbini, and the national park wildlife of Chitwan.

The tour works well for first-time Nepal visitors who want a broad introduction without committing to a trek. Travel is by private vehicle with an English-speaking guide throughout. All park permits, heritage site entry fees, guided tours, and inter-city transfers are included in the price.

Four destinations in eight days means the pace is comfortable but consistent. No two days feel the same, which is part of what makes this one of the more popular introductions to Nepal.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the best time to do this tour?

October, November, March, and April are the ideal months. Skies are clear, temperatures are pleasant, and wildlife activity in Chitwan is at its most visible. The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rainfall and reduced visibility; December and January are cold in the highlands.

  • Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Nepal?
    • Yes, it is designed with first-time visitors in mind. The itinerary covers Nepal's four most iconic destinations in a logical sequence, with private transport throughout and a guide who handles all logistics. No prior travel experience in Nepal is needed.

  • Do I need a visa to enter Nepal?

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. It costs USD 30 for a 15-day visa or USD 50 for 30 days. You will need a passport-sized photo and cash in a major currency. Citizens of India do not need a visa. Check current requirements with the Nepal Embassy before travel.

  • Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes. There are no strenuous activities on this itinerary, making it suitable for children of most ages. The Chitwan wildlife activities, Lumbini gardens, and Pokhara lakeside are particularly engaging for younger travellers. Let us know the ages of any children when you book so we can tailor the pace and activities accordingly.

  • Is Lumbini worth visiting if I am not Buddhist?

Absolutely. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant archaeological and spiritual sites in Asia, regardless of religious background. The Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar from 249 BC, and the international monastery zone representing dozens of countries make it a compelling cultural and historical destination for any traveller.

  • Will I definitely see a one-horned rhinoceros in Chitwan?
    • Chitwan National Park has one of the highest densities of one-horned rhinoceros in the world and sightings are very common, particularly on jeep safaris and canoe rides along the Rapti River. While wildlife sightings can never be fully guaranteed, the combination of jeep safari, canoe ride, and nature walk gives you multiple opportunities throughout the day.

  • What other wildlife might I see in Chitwan?

Beyond the one-horned rhinoceros, Chitwan is home to Bengal tigers, gharial and mugger crocodiles, sloth bears, leopards, spotted deer, and over 500 species of birds. Tiger sightings are rarer but do occur. Your naturalist guide will be tracking fresh signs throughout the safari.

  • How physically demanding is this tour?

This is a very easy itinerary, rated L1 on our difficulty scale. All travel between cities is by private vehicle. Activities involve light walking on flat ground. No previous fitness training is required. Guests with limited mobility should let us know in advance so we can make appropriate arrangements.

  • What is included in the Chitwan stay?

All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), park entrance fees, jeep safari, canoe ride on the Rapti River, guided nature walk in the buffer zone, and the evening Tharu cultural dance show are all included in your two-night Chitwan stay.

  • Can the tour be customised?

Yes. We can extend stays in any destination, add optional activities such as a Phewa Lake boat ride in Pokhara or a Kathmandu heritage walking tour, or arrange domestic flights between cities instead of road transfers. Get in touch and we will put together an itinerary based on your interests and schedule.

  • What happens if my international flight is delayed and I miss Day 1?

Contact us as soon as possible and we will adjust your Kathmandu arrival accordingly. Depending on the delay, we can modify the itinerary to recover lost time where possible without impacting your overall experience.

  • Is Mountainkick Treks a registered company?

Yes. Mountainkick Treks is a government-registered trekking and tour operator in Nepal, and a member of TAAN (Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal) and NTB (Nepal Tourism Board).

As one of the core guiding principles for Mountain Kick, we always give back to the mountain community in any way we can as a means of gratitude. The people who live in the Himalayas and share their homes with us deserve to have all their little problems fixed which seem very basic for outsiders but are commonplace in rural Nepal. The people lack proper access to healthcare, sanitation and education but a little effort from travellers goes on a long way to solve these issues. Mountain Kick has made it its corporate social responsibility to help improve the living standards of the local community. We make donations to their cause, organize social campaigns and programs and also have a few trips designed to mix a little volunteer work in your holiday.
