Best Time for Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Month by Month Guide

By Thapa Kumar · Oct 20, 2026 · 8 min read
Quick Answer

The best time for the Annapurna Base Camp trek is autumn (late September to November) or spring (March to May). October and November usually give the clearest views and driest trails. March and April bring rhododendrons in bloom between Ghorepani and Tadapani.

December can work well for clear skies and quiet trails if you’re ready for cold nights. January and February bring more snow and ice on the upper trail, and heavy snow can make some sections unsafe. June to August is monsoon, and we don’t recommend it.

Autumn: September to November

Autumn is the main season for ABC. The monsoon clears the air, the trails dry out and the views from Poon Hill and base camp are often at their best.

September starts wet. Cloud, rain and leeches hang on into the first half of the month. By late September things usually settle down, and you beat the October crowds.

October is the most popular month. Skies are usually clear and the trail is dry. It’s also the busiest time, especially between Chhomrong and base camp, and rooms at the top can be hard to get. Book early.

November is just as clear, with colder nights at base camp. It’s still busy in the first half and gets a little quieter later on. For many people it’s the best balance of views and weather.

Spring: March to May

Spring is the second main season. It’s warmer than autumn, and the forests come alive with colour.

March is the quiet start of spring. Mornings are often clear and the rhododendrons start to bloom lower down. Nights at base camp are still cold, and there can be snow above Deurali.

April is rhododendron season. The forests between Ghorepani and Tadapani turn red and pink, which is a big reason our standard route goes via Poon Hill. It’s warmer and busy, so book ahead.

May is the warmest month. Haze and afternoon cloud build as the monsoon gets closer, so views are less reliable, especially later in the month. Go early in May if you can.

Winter: December to February

Winter on the ABC trail is cold, clear and quiet. ABC tops out at 4,130m, lower than many big treks, but winter here still needs care, good gear and a flexible plan.

December is often a great month. Skies are clear, the trails are much quieter and the lower trail is still comfortable during the day. Nights at base camp are cold. See our guide to trekking in Nepal in December.

January and February are the coldest months. Snow and ice can cover the trail above Deurali, and the narrow valley towards Machhapuchhre Base Camp can carry avalanche risk after heavy snow. Some sections may become impassable for a while.

Warm clothes and ice cleats aren’t enough on their own. Your guide checks recent snowfall and the upper trail before going on, and may change the plan, wait for conditions to improve or turn back if it isn’t safe. Winter isn’t the best choice for a first-time trekker. See our guide to Annapurna Base Camp difficulty.

Bring a warm sleeping bag, a good down jacket, insulated gloves and good boots for winter. The wind above Machhapuchhre Base Camp makes it feel even colder. Leave spare days in case snow holds you up.

Monsoon: June to August

We don’t recommend ABC in the monsoon. The trails are muddy and slippery, leeches are common from Nayapul to Chhomrong, and landslides sometimes close sections of the route. Cloud often hides the mountains, which are the main reason to go. Early September can still be wet too, so don’t assume the monsoon ends when the calendar says autumn.

Best Time for the Views

October and November usually give the most reliable mix of clear views and good trekking conditions. After the monsoon the air is clean, so Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre stand out from Poon Hill and base camp.

December often has crisp, clear skies too, but it’s colder and winter snow makes the upper trail less predictable. Spring views are good in March and April, but haze builds through May. No month guarantees clear skies.

Best Time for Rhododendrons

Late March to April. The forests between Ghorepani and Tadapani are the highlight. Exact timing changes each year with the weather and altitude.

Best Time for Fewer Crowds

For a quieter trail in good weather, try early December or early March. January and February are the quietest of all, but come with more snow and cold. October, November and April are the peak periods, though crowds vary by date.
