Annapurna Circuit Best Time: When to Trek

By Thapa Kumar · Sep 15, 2026 · 13 min read

Quick Answer

The best time to trek the Annapurna Circuit is October and November. The monsoon has ended, the air is usually clear and conditions around Thorong La are generally more reliable. March to May is the other main trekking season, with warmer temperatures and rhododendrons blooming on the lower sections.

September can work as the monsoon retreats, while December to February is much colder and snow can affect the high pass. June to August is the least suitable period for most trekkers because of monsoon rain and poor conditions on the lower trail.

Annapurna Circuit Best Time: Key Facts

Key Facts
  • Best overall: October and November
  • Best spring window: March to April
  • Quietest good option: November or March
  • Rhododendron season: March to April
  • Avoid for most trekkers: June to August (monsoon)
  • Winter trekking: Possible with proper cold-weather preparation
  • Key consideration: Conditions at Thorong La (5,416m) matter more than the calendar

When Is the Best Time to Trek the Annapurna Circuit?

If you want the simplest answer, choose October or November.

These months usually give you the best combination of clear mountain views, manageable temperatures and more reliable conditions for crossing Thorong La at 5,416m.

The second major trekking window is March to May. Spring is warmer at lower elevations and the forests are greener. Rhododendrons also bloom along parts of the route, particularly around the lower Annapurna sections.

The Annapurna Circuit is possible outside these main seasons, but the trade-offs become bigger. Winter brings cold and snow around the pass. The summer monsoon brings rain to the lower sections and can make roads and trails difficult.

October: The Most Popular Month

October is one of the best months for the Annapurna Circuit.

By October the summer monsoon has normally moved away from Nepal. The air becomes clearer and the mountains are often visible from the lower valleys through the high sections of the circuit.

Temperatures are also comfortable for walking at lower elevations. Higher up, mornings and evenings are cold, especially as you approach Thorong Phedi or High Camp and the pass itself.

The main downside is that October is busy. This is peak trekking season, so popular villages can have more trekkers and accommodation can be busy during the busiest weeks.

If your priority is the best balance of weather and mountain visibility, October is hard to beat.

November: Our Other Top Choice

November is arguably the best month for trekkers who want excellent weather with slightly fewer people than October.

The post monsoon air is usually clear and the mountain views can be excellent. Days are still comfortable for walking, although temperatures drop as winter approaches.

Thorong La is also an important consideration. November is generally a good month for the crossing, but conditions can change quickly at 5,416m. Snow and strong winds are always possible at this elevation.

If you are choosing between October and November, both are excellent. October has slightly warmer conditions and more activity. November is often quieter and colder.

September: Good, But Watch the Weather

September sits between the monsoon and the main autumn season.

Early September can still be wet, particularly on the lower sections. Later in the month conditions generally improve as the monsoon retreats.

The advantage is that there are usually fewer trekkers than during the October peak. The disadvantage is that you cannot assume the same stable weather you would expect later in autumn.

If you are travelling in September, keep some flexibility in your itinerary and check current trail and road conditions before starting.

March: The Start of Spring

March marks the beginning of the spring trekking season.

Lower elevations become warmer and the landscape starts turning green. Higher sections can still be cold and snow can remain around Thorong La after winter.

March is a good option if you want fewer crowds than the main autumn season and do not mind colder mornings at altitude.

The exact conditions around the pass matter more than the calendar. A warm March at Besisahar does not tell you what Thorong La will look like a week later.

April: One of the Best Spring Months

April is one of the strongest months for a spring Annapurna Circuit trek.

The weather is generally warmer than in March and the lower sections can be particularly good for walking. Rhododendrons are also in bloom in parts of the region.

At higher elevations, mornings can still be cold. Thorong La remains the main weather consideration because you are crossing above 5,400m.

April is a good choice if you want spring conditions without waiting until the hotter and sometimes cloudier part of late spring.

May: Warm and Still Possible

May is the end of the main spring season.

Lower elevations can become quite warm, while conditions higher on the circuit remain much cooler. As the monsoon approaches, afternoon clouds can become more common.

Early May is generally a better choice than late May if clear mountain views are important to you.

The route remains very doable in May, but if you have complete flexibility, October, November, March or April would usually be our first choices.

What About December to February?

The Annapurna Circuit can be trekked in winter, but it is a different experience.

Lower sections can be quiet and clear days can give excellent mountain views. The problem is the altitude.

Thorong La reaches 5,416m. Heavy snowfall can make the pass difficult or temporarily impossible to cross. Upper villages can also become very cold and some accommodation options may close during the coldest period.

If you want to trek the Circuit in winter, you need proper cold weather equipment and flexibility in case conditions around the pass change.

For a first Annapurna Circuit trek, we would generally choose one of the main spring or autumn windows instead.

Why We Do Not Recommend the Monsoon Season

June to August is the weakest period for a standard Annapurna Circuit trek.

The lower sections receive heavy monsoon rain. Trails can become muddy and slippery and road conditions can change after heavy rainfall. Clouds can also hide the mountains for long periods.

The situation is different higher on the Mustang side of the Annapurna range, which sits in a rain shadow. However, getting through the lower sections is still an important part of the standard circuit.

For most trekkers, it makes more sense to choose a different season rather than plan the classic circuit during peak monsoon.

When Is the Best Time for Thorong La?

Thorong La is the part of the Annapurna Circuit that deserves the most attention when choosing your dates.

The pass is 5,416m high. Weather at this elevation can change quickly even during the main trekking seasons.

October and November generally offer the most reliable conditions. March and April are also good, although winter snow can still be present around the pass.

The crossing normally starts early in the morning, whether you overnight at Thorong Phedi or Thorong High Camp. This gives trekkers the best chance of reaching the pass before afternoon weather becomes more difficult.

Good weather in Manang does not guarantee good weather at Thorong La. Your guide should check local conditions before the crossing and the itinerary should allow some flexibility when necessary.

Best Time for Mountain Views

If clear mountain views are your priority, October and November are the safest choices.

Post monsoon conditions often bring clearer air across the Himalayas. You can see the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri and other major peaks from different parts of the circuit.

March and April can also give excellent views, particularly in the mornings. May can bring more afternoon cloud as the monsoon approaches.

Even in the best season, mountain weather is not guaranteed every day. The Himalayas have their own schedule.

Best Time for Fewer Crowds

If you want a quieter trek, November is a good compromise.

October is extremely popular because the weather is so reliable. November still has excellent trekking conditions but tends to feel less crowded as the season moves toward winter.

March can also be quieter than the main autumn period.

Winter is the quietest option, but you are trading crowds for much colder conditions and a greater chance of snow around Thorong La.

Best Time for Rhododendrons

Choose spring if flowers are important to you.

Rhododendrons bloom along the lower and middle sections of the Annapurna region, adding colour to the forest sections of the route. March and April are particularly good months for this.

The high altitude sections are a different environment. Once you move above the tree line, the landscape becomes much more open and alpine.

Does the Best Time Change With Your Annapurna Circuit Itinerary?

Yes.

The Annapurna Circuit has changed over the years because of road development and different trekking itineraries. Some itineraries use vehicles on lower sections while longer versions walk more of the traditional route.

MountainKick offers a 16 day Annapurna Circuit Trek as well as a longer 21 day Classical Annapurna Circuit.

The longer route spends more time walking the traditional sections, so trail conditions in the lower valleys matter more when choosing your dates.

Whichever itinerary you choose, the main seasonal consideration remains the same: you need suitable conditions for crossing Thorong La.

How Cold Is the Annapurna Circuit?

Temperature changes dramatically during the trek.

Besisahar and the lower valleys can feel warm during the day, while Manang and the upper sections are much colder. Around Thorong Phedi, Thorong High Camp and Thorong La, you should be prepared for freezing temperatures even during the main trekking season.

This is one reason the best trekking months are not simply the warmest months. You want a balance between comfortable walking temperatures and stable high altitude conditions.

See our Annapurna Circuit cost guide for the other expenses you should plan for, including food and personal spending.

What Should You Pack for the Best Season?

Do not pack for October or April as if you are going on a warm-weather hike.

The lower sections can be warm while the upper circuit can be very cold. You need layers that allow you to adjust as the altitude and temperature change.

  • Warm down jacket
  • Thermal base layers
  • Fleece or insulating mid layer
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Warm gloves and hat
  • Good trekking boots
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Water bottles or a hydration system
  • Sleeping bag suitable for cold nights
  • Trekking poles

Our Nepal trekking packing list covers the equipment in more detail.

Is October Better Than April?

For most trekkers, yes, but it depends on what you want.

October usually wins for clearer post monsoon skies and more stable conditions.

April is warmer in many lower sections and gives you spring flowers and greener landscapes.

If your main goal is mountain visibility and the most reliable conditions around Thorong La, choose October or November.

If you prefer spring, flowers and warmer lower sections, April is an excellent choice.

Our Recommendation

If you can choose any dates, we would put the seasons in this order:

  1. October to November for the most reliable overall conditions
  2. March to April for the best spring experience
  3. September if you are comfortable with some remaining monsoon uncertainty
  4. December to February for experienced trekkers prepared for winter conditions
  5. June to August only if you have a specific reason to trek during monsoon

There is no single perfect month for everyone. The right choice depends on whether you care most about clear views, flowers, fewer people, warmer temperatures or avoiding snow.

For most first time trekkers, though, October and November are the easiest recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month for the Annapurna Circuit?

October and November are generally the best months. They offer a good combination of clear skies, mountain visibility and reliable conditions for the Thorong La crossing.

Is March a good month for the Annapurna Circuit?

Yes. March is the beginning of the spring trekking season. Lower sections become warmer and the route is generally quieter than during peak autumn. Snow can still affect the higher sections, so current conditions around Thorong La should be checked.

Is April good for the Annapurna Circuit?

Yes. April is one of the best spring months. The weather is generally warmer and rhododendrons are blooming in parts of the lower route. The high pass can still be cold.

Is May too late for the Annapurna Circuit?

No. May is still a viable trekking month, especially earlier in the month. Temperatures are warmer but afternoon cloud can become more common as the monsoon approaches.

Can I trek the Annapurna Circuit in September?

Yes, particularly later in September as the monsoon retreats. Early September can still be wet, so weather and trail conditions should be checked before departure.

Can I trek the Annapurna Circuit in winter?

Yes, but winter requires more preparation. Snow and cold can affect Thorong La and the upper sections. The pass can occasionally become difficult or temporarily closed after heavy snowfall.

Can I trek the Annapurna Circuit during the monsoon?

It is possible, but June to August is not recommended for most trekkers. Rain can make lower trails muddy and slippery and can cause road and trail disruptions. Mountain views are also less reliable.

How high is Thorong La?

Thorong La Pass is 5,416m above sea level. It is the highest point on the standard Annapurna Circuit and the main reason weather and acclimatisation need to be taken seriously.

How long does the Annapurna Circuit take?

It depends on the itinerary. MountainKick offers a 16 day Annapurna Circuit Trek and a 21 day Classical Annapurna Circuit. Longer itineraries allow more time to walk the traditional route.

What is the hardest part of the Annapurna Circuit?

The Thorong La crossing is usually the hardest day. The combination of altitude, cold, an early start and a long climb makes it more demanding than most lower sections. Read our Annapurna Circuit difficulty guide for a more detailed breakdown.
