What It Really Looks Like
Paragliding in Pokhara: What to Expect
Fly with Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range filling the sky ahead of you
Your pilot does the flying. You just run a few steps and sit back
Glide down over Phewa Lake and land right by Lakeside
A 25 minute flight, a longer cross country flight, or a microlight instead
Paragliding in Pokhara is one of the best ways to see the Annapurna range. You take off from Sarangkot hill at 1,592 metres with a licensed tandem pilot. Then you float over the valley with Phewa Lake below and Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna peaks in front of you. Pokhara is known as one of the best places in the world to paraglide, thanks to steady thermals and that mountain backdrop.
You do not need any experience. Your pilot gives you a short briefing, clips you into the harness and does all the flying. You just run a few steps down the slope and you are in the air. Most people say it feels calm rather than scary. Ask your pilot and they can add a few spins and turns at the end if you want some excitement.
We pick you up from your hotel in Pokhara and drive you up to the launch site. Choose a standard flight of about 25 minutes or a longer cross country flight of 40 to 60 minutes. If you would rather fly with an engine, a microlight takes you higher and closer to the mountains. Every flight lands by Phewa Lake, a short walk from Lakeside.
What you will see and do:
- Take off from Sarangkot with views straight across to the Annapurna range
- Fly over Phewa Lake and the World Peace Pagoda
- Watch eagles and vultures ride the same thermals as you
- Land by the lake, close to the Lakeside cafés
- Photos and video of your flight from the pilot’s camera, if you want them
Want a bigger thrill? Our Nepal Adventure Tour combines paragliding with Trishuli rafting, a 228 metre bungee jump and a Chitwan safari.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience?
No. All flights are tandem, so you fly with a licensed pilot who does the steering, take off and landing. You get a short briefing at the launch site. All you have to do is run a few steps down the slope when the pilot says go.
Is paragliding in Pokhara safe?
We only work with licensed operators and experienced tandem pilots. Every flight has a reserve parachute and pilots check the wind before every take off. If conditions are not right they do not fly. Like any adventure sport it carries some risk, which is why travel insurance that covers paragliding is required.
Are there age or weight limits?
Yes. The operators set their own limits for age and weight. Tell us the age and weight of everyone in your group when you book and we will confirm with the operator before you pay.
What is the best time to fly?
October to May is the flying season. October and November give the clearest mountain views. In the day, late morning is usually best. The thermals have built up so you stay in the air longer, and the mountains are often still clear before afternoon cloud comes in. From June to September monsoon rain stops most flights.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Pilots only fly when the wind and cloud are safe. If your slot is cancelled we move you to a later slot or another day. This is why it is a good idea to book paragliding early in your stay in Pokhara, so there is time to try again.
What should I wear?
Closed shoes that lace up, long trousers and a light jacket. It is cooler in the air than on the ground. Sunglasses and a hat that will not blow off are useful. Leave loose items, scarves and flip-flops behind.
Will I feel sick?
Most people feel fine. A normal flight is smooth and calm. If you get motion sickness, tell your pilot before take off and skip the spins at the end. Avoid a big meal just before you fly.
Can I get photos and video?
Yes. Most pilots carry a camera on a stick and film your whole flight. You pay the pilot for the files on the day if you want them. You can also bring your own phone or camera if it is on a secure strap.
Paragliding or microlight?
Paragliding is quiet and slow, with just the sound of the wind. A microlight has an engine, so it climbs higher and flies closer to the mountains. Pick paragliding for the feeling of flying like a bird. Pick a microlight if the best possible mountain view is what you want.
