Everest Mountain Flight: What to Expect
Fly east along the Himalaya to Everest and back to Kathmandu
Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu out of your window on a clear morning
Every passenger gets a window and a short visit to the cockpit
Morning flights. You are back at your hotel by mid morning
The Everest mountain flight is the easiest way to see the world’s highest mountain. You take off from Kathmandu early in the morning and fly east along the Himalaya for about an hour. On a clear day the whole range lines up outside your window. Langtang and Gauri Shankar come first, then Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. The plane turns near Everest and flies back so both sides of the cabin get the view.
No fitness or experience is needed. Every passenger has a window seat. The cabin crew point out each peak as you pass and you get a turn to look through the cockpit window with the pilots. It is a good choice if you are not trekking, have a spare morning in Kathmandu, or want to see Everest before or after a trek in another region.
Flights only go when the weather is clear enough to see the mountains. If your flight is cancelled for weather the airline moves you to the next day or refunds the fare. That is why we suggest booking it early in your stay.
What you will see and do:
- Mount Everest from the air on a clear morning
- Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu, three more of the world’s highest peaks
- The Langtang range and Gauri Shankar on the way out
- A window seat and a look from the cockpit
- A souvenir flight certificate
Want to stand on the ground facing Everest? See the Everest Base Camp Trek. Short on time in Kathmandu? Pair the flight with our Kathmandu City Tour on the same day.

“We liked the concern of this company for its staffs and the environmental awareness and it has.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I definitely see Everest?
Only if the weather is clear, which is why flights only go when the mountains are visible. October to December gives the best chance. If your flight is cancelled for weather the airline moves you to the next day or refunds the fare.
Which side of the plane is best?
It does not matter. Every passenger has a window seat and the plane flies out along the mountains and turns back, so both sides get the view. You also get a turn to look out of the cockpit window.
How early is the flight?
Flights leave between about 6:30 and 8am when the sky is clearest. We pick you up from your hotel at around 5:30am and you are back in time for breakfast.
Do I need to be fit or worry about altitude?
No. The cabin is pressurised so you will not feel the altitude. Anyone can take the flight, including children and older travellers.
Which peaks will I see?
On a clear morning you see the Langtang range and Gauri Shankar first, then Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. The cabin crew point out each one as you pass.
Can I take photos?
Yes. Bring your phone or camera with a full battery. Wear dark clothes so your reflection does not show in the window, and hold the lens close to the glass.
Can I do the flight and a city tour on the same day?
Yes. Fly at dawn and join the Kathmandu City Tour after breakfast. It makes a full day out of a short stay in Kathmandu.
