How Many Days Do You Need for a Nepal Trek?

Oct 5, 2026  ·  8 min read  ·  By Thapa Kumar
Quick Answer

Most popular Nepal treks take about 10 to 16 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. Longer circuits and combined routes can take 17 to 21 days or more. Shorter treks near Pokhara, like Poon Hill, take about 9 days including travel.

The trip is always longer than the walking. You also need time to arrive and get permits sorted in Kathmandu, travel to the trailhead, take acclimatisation days, and get back. On treks that start with a mountain flight, like Everest Base Camp or Upper Mustang, add one or two spare days for weather delays before your international flight home.

Key Facts
  • Short treks: about 9 to 10 days in total
  • Classic treks (EBC, ABC, Gokyo): about 13 to 14 days
  • Long circuits (Annapurna Circuit, Manaslu, Upper Mustang): about 15 to 21 days
  • Acclimatisation: high altitude itineraries need planned acclimatisation, but the number of rest days varies by route
  • Buffer days: add 1 to 2 for Lukla or Jomsom flights
  • Arrival: plan your first day in Kathmandu as a rest and briefing day

Why a Trek Takes Longer Than the Walking

A “12-day trek” in Nepal usually means 12 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, not 12 days on the trail. The total includes:

  • Arrival in Kathmandu: a day to land, rest, meet your guide and sort out final permits and gear
  • Getting to the trailhead: a flight to Lukla or Jomsom, or a drive of anything from a few hours to a full day
  • Acclimatisation days: rest days at altitude, like Namche on the EBC trek or Manang on the Annapurna Circuit. They’re a big part of why people finish.
  • The return: walking or driving back, then the flight or drive to Kathmandu
  • A buffer: spare time for flight delays and anything unexpected

So when you compare treks, look at the total trip length, not just the number of walking days.

What Fits Into the Time You Have

About 9 days. Short, lower treks near Pokhara work best, like Poon Hill. You see big mountains without the altitude or long travel days. See our guide to short treks in Nepal.

About 10 days. Mardi Himal and the Annapurna Base Camp Express both fit, and they take you higher, into real mountain scenery. The Langtang Valley trek also fits, once road access is back to normal.

About two weeks. This is the sweet spot for many classic Nepal treks. MountainKick’s current itineraries put Gokyo at 13 days, Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp at 14 days, and Manaslu and Tsum Valley at 15 days. For EBC, it’s worth having a day or two more than the itinerary if you can, for Lukla flight delays.

About three weeks or more. You have time for longer circuits and combined routes, with room for a slower pace or extra days in Kathmandu, Pokhara or Chitwan. MountainKick’s longer options include the 16-day Annapurna Circuit, 16-day Upper Mustang, 17-day Nar Phu with Annapurna Circuit, 17-day EBC via Gokyo, 17-day Langtang Gosainkunda Helambu and 21-day Classical Annapurna Circuit.

How Many Buffer Days Should You Add?

  • Treks that fly to or from Lukla (EBC, Gokyo, Three Passes): keep at least 1 to 2 spare days before your international departure. Lukla flights are often delayed by weather, and when they operate via Ramechhap, the road transfer from Kathmandu adds another step. See our guide to Lukla flight delays.
  • Treks involving Jomsom flights (Upper Mustang, some Annapurna itineraries): keep at least 1 spare day, because flights are weather dependent. Some itineraries use the road instead, so the right buffer depends on the transport plan. See our guide to Pokhara to Jomsom.
  • Treks that start and end by road (ABC, Manaslu, Mardi Himal): a buffer is less critical, but a spare day still helps if roads are blocked after rain.

Don’t book your international flight home for the day after your trek ends, especially from the Everest region.

Don’t Cut the Acclimatisation Days

When time is tight, it’s tempting to drop a rest day. On high altitude treks, don’t remove planned acclimatisation days just to save time. Skipping them can increase the risk of altitude illness and make the trek much harder than it needs to be. If your schedule is too short, choose a shorter or lower route rather than trying to squeeze the itinerary. See our altitude sickness guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for the Everest Base Camp trek?

MountainKick’s EBC trek is 14 days from Kathmandu. If your itinerary flies to or from Lukla, keep at least 1 to 2 spare days before your international departure.

How many days do you need for the Annapurna Circuit?

16 days on MountainKick’s standard itinerary, or 21 days on the Classical version that walks every section from Besisahar.

How many days do you need for Annapurna Base Camp?

14 days on the standard itinerary, or 10 days on the Annapurna Base Camp Express.

Can I do a trek in Nepal in one week?

A week is tight. MountainKick’s Poon Hill trek is 9 days from Kathmandu, including travel to Pokhara. For higher treks like EBC, a week isn’t enough to acclimatise safely.

How long is a trek in Nepal for beginners?

Most first-time trekkers do something between 9 and 14 days. Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp are popular first treks.

Do I need extra days for Lukla flights?

Yes. Weather delays are common, so add 1 to 2 spare days after an Everest region trek before your international flight.
