Lukla Flight via Ramechhap 2026: The Complete Guide

Quick Answer

During spring (mid-March to mid-May) and autumn (late September to late November), Lukla flights operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, not Kathmandu. You leave your hotel at around 1:30 AM, drive 4 to 5 hours east on the BP Highway, and take a 15 to 20 minute flight into Lukla.

This is standard procedure, not an exception. The drive is included in MountainKick packages at no extra cost. Your guide travels with you from Kathmandu.

Lukla Flight via Ramechhap: Quick Facts

Key Facts
  • Departure from Kathmandu: 1:00 AM to 2:00 AM
  • Drive duration: 4 to 5 hours via BP Highway
  • Airport: Manthali Airport, Ramechhap (IATA: RHP)
  • Flight duration: 15 to 20 minutes

If you are flying to Lukla during spring or autumn, you will not be departing from Kathmandu. You will be waking up at 1:30 AM, getting into a vehicle in Thamel, and driving four to five hours east through the hills to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap district. From there you take a 15 to 20 minute flight into Lukla.

Most trekkers find out about this the night before their trek starts. This post explains what is happening, why it happens, and exactly what MountainKick does to make sure it does not derail your first day on the trail. For a full picture of what your Everest Base Camp trek costs in 2026, including what is and is not included in the package price, read our complete cost breakdown.

Why Flights Operate from Ramechhap

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport has one runway shared by international and domestic flights. During peak trekking seasons, the volume of Lukla flights creates serious congestion. There is also a narrow morning weather window for landing at Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport. All mountain flights in Nepal operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), meaning pilots must have direct visual contact with the terrain to fly. Flights have to get in and out before cloud and wind build later in the day, typically by 11 AM.

When all Lukla flights queue from Kathmandu, many miss that window. Delays stack up, trekkers miss Day 1 of their itinerary, and some do not get out at all.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) moved peak season Lukla flights to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap to fix this. Ramechhap sits at 474 metres, well below the cloud and wind patterns that affect Kathmandu at 1,400 metres. It has no international traffic. The VFR window at Ramechhap is longer and cleaner than at Kathmandu, which means airlines can run multiple rotations to Lukla in a single morning with significantly fewer delays.

The result is that Ramechhap flights are more reliable than Kathmandu flights were during peak season. The inconvenience is the drive, not the flight.

When Does This Apply

The Ramechhap diversion operates during:

  • Spring season: mid-March to mid-May
  • Autumn season: late September to late November

Outside these windows, flights typically operate from Kathmandu’s domestic terminal and take 30 to 35 minutes. If you are trekking in December, January, or February, you will likely depart from Kathmandu directly.

If your trek falls in spring or autumn, plan for Ramechhap. It is not a possibility. It is the standard operating procedure for those seasons.

What the Drive Actually Looks Like

Your vehicle leaves Thamel at around 1:30 AM. Your MountainKick guide travels with you, so you are not navigating an unfamiliar road in the dark without support.

The drive follows the BP Highway east out of Kathmandu and into the Tamakoshi River Valley. It takes four to five hours depending on road conditions and traffic. The BP Highway is paved throughout but is winding with long switchback sections, particularly after Dhulikhel. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication before you leave Kathmandu. Sitting in the front seat also helps.

The route passes through some notable points. After Dhulikhel the road drops into the Sunkoshi River valley, crossing the river at a low bridge before climbing again into the hill terrain beyond. Around the two hour mark, your driver will typically stop at Mulkot for a short break. There are basic tea stalls open at this hour and a toilet stop. It is worth getting out and stretching before the final section of the drive.

Most trekkers sleep in the vehicle for the first couple of hours and wake up somewhere around the Sunkoshi crossing or the Mulkot stop. By the time you reach Ramechhap, it is around 5:30 to 6:30 AM. Manthali Airport is small and functional. Check-in counters open at 6:00 AM. There is basic tea and food available near the terminal.

Pro tip: Bring an eye mask and a neck pillow. The vehicle is comfortable but the road is winding and the first two hours are pitch dark. Trekkers who sleep through the Dhulikhel switchbacks arrive at Manthali rested and ready. Pack both items in your daypack the night before, not in your duffel.

The Aircraft: Why STOL Planes Are Used on This Route

Your flight to Lukla uses a Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft, typically a Twin Otter DHC-6, Dornier 228, or Let L-410. These are not small planes by accident. They are specifically engineered for exactly this kind of operation.

Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport has a runway of 527 metres with a significant uphill gradient and a sheer drop at one end. Standard commercial aircraft cannot operate here. STOL aircraft are built with high-lift wing designs, powerful engines relative to their weight, and robust undercarriage systems that allow them to decelerate rapidly on short surfaces.

The Twin Otter DHC-6 has a takeoff distance of around 300 metres at sea level and performs reliably at the altitudes and temperatures typical of Lukla operations. The Dornier 228 is a pressurised twin-turboprop with a strong safety record across high-altitude mountain routes in Nepal, Tibet, and the Himalayan region. The Let L-410 is a Czech-built aircraft widely used across mountainous terrain in Asia and known for its reliability in variable weather conditions.

All three aircraft types operating this route are approved by CAAN for Lukla operations and are flown by pilots with specific mountain flying certification.

Baggage Rules on the Flight

The baggage allowance on the Ramechhap to Lukla flight is 10 kg checked and 5 kg carry-on per person. This is firm. MountainKick provides a duffel bag for your trek gear which is what your porter carries. Keep your daypack within the carry-on limit and pack your duffel to the 10 kg allowance.

Excess baggage charges apply and can add up quickly. Sort your bags the night before in Kathmandu, not at the airport at 6 AM. There is no luggage storage at Manthali Airport, so any bags not flying with you need to be left at your Kathmandu hotel before departure.

What Happens if the Flight Is Delayed or Cancelled

Weather delays at Lukla are common and real. All flights operate under VFR, so if visibility drops or wind exceeds safe limits at Lukla, flights stop until conditions improve. This can mean a two to three hour wait at Manthali, or in some cases a full day delay.

MountainKick builds buffer into the itinerary for exactly this reason. Your guide monitors conditions and coordinates directly with airline operations at Manthali. If a delay happens, rebooking is handled at no extra cost to you.

If flights are grounded for multiple days, helicopter evacuation to Lukla is available. Helicopters operate under different flight rules and often fly in conditions that ground fixed-wing STOL aircraft. A helicopter seat from Manthali to Lukla typically costs around USD 400 per person, which is less than the USD 500 to 700 you would pay for a direct Kathmandu to Lukla helicopter. Helicopter costs are additional and must be covered by your travel insurance. Read our travel insurance guide for Nepal trekking to understand exactly what your policy must cover.

Should You Stay Overnight in Ramechhap Instead?

Some operators offer the option of travelling to Ramechhap the day before and staying overnight to avoid the 1:30 AM departure. It sounds appealing but has real drawbacks.

Accommodation in Ramechhap town is basic. There are no hotels that match the standard of your Kathmandu hotel. You will sleep less well, in an unfamiliar place, with your trek gear, the night before a big day. You also spend an extra night away from Kathmandu’s restaurants, gear shops, and pharmacies if you need anything last minute.

MountainKick uses the overnight drive for a reason. You sleep in a comfortable hotel in Kathmandu, your guide picks you up at 1:30 AM, you sleep in the vehicle, and you are at Manthali by 6:00 AM ready to be first in line at check-in. Being early at Manthali matters because the best weather window is early morning and the first flights of the day have the highest completion rate.

The Return Flight

After your trek, you fly back from Lukla to Ramechhap and then drive back to Kathmandu. The return drive is the same four to five hours on the BP Highway, but in daylight. You will see the Sunkoshi valley, the Mulkot hillside, and the Tamakoshi River properly this time.

MountainKick arranges the return vehicle from Ramechhap to your Kathmandu hotel. You will be back in Thamel by early afternoon on a normal day.

Important: Book your international departure flight at least two to three days after your planned trek completion date. A weather delay on the return Lukla flight is possible and there is no way to rush it. Missing an international connection because of a Lukla delay is an entirely avoidable problem.

How MountainKick Handles the Ramechhap Logistics

When you book the MountainKick Everest Base Camp trek, every part of the Ramechhap logistics is managed for you:

  • Your guide travels with you on the overnight drive from Kathmandu

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ramechhap drive included in the MountainKick package?

Yes. Private vehicle transfers to and from Manthali Airport are included in your trek package at no additional cost. See the full list of what is included on the EBC trek package page.

Can I stay overnight in Ramechhap instead of doing the overnight drive?

Some operators offer this but MountainKick uses the overnight drive. Accommodation in Ramechhap is basic and being first at Manthali check-in gives you the best chance of catching the early weather window. Sleeping in a comfortable Kathmandu hotel and driving overnight is the better option for most trekkers.

Is there breakfast available at Manthali Airport?

Basic tea, biscuits, and simple snacks are available from around 5:30 AM. It is not a full breakfast. Eat something in Kathmandu before you leave or bring snacks for the drive. Your first proper meal will be in Lukla or Phakding.

Can I leave extra luggage in Ramechhap?

No — there is no luggage storage at Manthali Airport. Any bags not flying with you to Lukla should be left at your Kathmandu hotel before the overnight departure. MountainKick can arrange secure storage at your hotel for the duration of your trek.

What if I get motion sickness on the BP Highway drive?

Take medication before leaving Kathmandu. The BP Highway is winding with long switchback sections after Dhulikhel. Sitting in the front seat reduces symptoms significantly. Let your guide know before departure and they will arrange seating accordingly.

What airlines operate the Ramechhap to Lukla route?

Tara Air, Summit Air, and Sita Air all operate this route using STOL aircraft — specifically the Twin Otter DHC-6, Dornier 228, and Let L-410. These aircraft are designed for short high-altitude runways and have an established safety record on mountain routes in Nepal.

What if my flight is cancelled and I need a helicopter?

Helicopter seats to Lukla from Manthali cost approximately USD 400 per person — cheaper than a direct Kathmandu to Lukla helicopter at USD 500 to 700. Helicopter costs are not included in your package and must be covered by your travel insurance. Read our travel insurance guide to make sure your policy covers this.

How does the Ramechhap flight affect the total cost of my trek?

It does not. The round-trip flight via Ramechhap is included in your MountainKick package price with no peak season surcharge. For a full breakdown of every cost on the trek read our EBC trek cost guide for 2026.

How does the Ramechhap route compare to flying direct from Kathmandu?

Ramechhap flights are more reliable during peak season despite the early start. Kathmandu flights during spring and autumn suffer from runway congestion and a narrow VFR window. Ramechhap has a wider, cleaner weather window and no international traffic competing for the runway. The 15 to 20 minute flight from Manthali is also shorter than the 30 to 35 minute flight from Kathmandu.
