How to Get from Kathmandu to Chame
Most trekkers heading for the upper section of the Annapurna Circuit travel through Besisahar before continuing towards Chame.
The road from Kathmandu to Besisahar is generally in better condition. Beyond Besisahar the road becomes much rougher and a proper 4×4 is the better choice.
There are three main ways to make the journey:
- Private 4×4 from Kathmandu directly to Chame
- Bus to Besisahar followed by a shared jeep
- HiAce to Besisahar followed by private 4x4s for larger groups
Kathmandu to Chame by Private 4×4
For trekkers who want to start the Annapurna Circuit from Chame, a private 4×4 is the simplest option.
MountainKick charges NPR 45,000 per private 4×4 from Kathmandu to Chame. The price includes the vehicle, driver and fuel.
The vehicle is a proper 4×4 such as a Scorpio. A normal car is not suitable for the full journey to Chame because the road becomes rough after Besisahar.
We recommend a maximum of four trekkers with trekking luggage in one private 4×4. A vehicle may technically have more seats, but trekking bags make four passengers the practical limit for a comfortable journey.
Departure is normally around 6:00 AM from Kathmandu.
The drive can take around 8 to 10 hours, but this should only be treated as an estimate. Highway traffic can slow the first part of the journey and road conditions beyond Besisahar can change the travel time considerably.
Why Does Kathmandu to Chame Cost More Than Kathmandu to Besisahar?
The main difference is the road beyond Besisahar.
Kathmandu to Besisahar is mostly a highway journey. Once you continue towards Chame the road becomes rougher and more demanding. A suitable 4×4 is needed and the vehicle has to travel much farther into the mountains.
That is why a direct private journey to Chame costs considerably more than a private vehicle going only as far as Besisahar.
If you are only travelling to Besisahar, see our full Kathmandu to Besisahar transport guide.
Kathmandu to Chame by Bus and Shared Jeep
If budget is more important than convenience, you can travel by public transport.
The usual approach is to take a bus from Kathmandu to Besisahar and then change to a shared jeep for the road towards Chame.

The shared jeep from Besisahar to Chame costs around NPR 2,500 to 3,000 per person.
This option is cheaper than booking a private 4×4, but it can take longer. You also have less control over departure times and may have to wait for the next available vehicle at Besisahar.
For travellers who are not in a hurry and are comfortable with local transport, it is a reasonable way to reach Chame.
Kathmandu to Chame for Larger Groups
A direct 4×4 for every four trekkers is not always the most economical arrangement for a larger group.
For bigger groups, MountainKick can arrange a HiAce from Kathmandu to Besisahar for NPR 26,000 and then arrange private 4x4s from Besisahar to Chame at NPR 20,000 per 4×4.
This gives larger groups more flexibility while keeping the rougher Besisahar to Chame section in suitable vehicles.
The best arrangement depends on the size of your group and where you plan to start trekking.
Kathmandu to Chame Route
The journey follows the main road west from Kathmandu before continuing north into the Marsyangdi Valley.
The general route is:
Kathmandu → Mugling → Dumre → Besisahar → Dharapani → Chame
The character of the road changes significantly along the way. The Kathmandu to Besisahar section is mainly a highway journey. Beyond Besisahar the road becomes narrower, rougher and more mountainous.
What Is the Road Like From Kathmandu to Chame?
Road conditions are one of the biggest reasons we recommend a proper 4×4 for the complete journey.
The highway section from Kathmandu towards Besisahar is generally easier. After Besisahar the road follows the Marsyangdi Valley and conditions become more challenging.

There can be rough sections, uneven surfaces and delays caused by road conditions. During the monsoon and after heavy rain, conditions can change quickly.
For this reason, the estimated 8 to 10 hour travel time should not be treated as a guaranteed arrival time.
How Long Does Kathmandu to Chame Take?
A direct private 4×4 can take around 8 to 10 hours in good conditions.
However, there is no fixed travel time. Kathmandu traffic, highway conditions and the road beyond Besisahar can all affect the journey.
We recommend leaving Kathmandu around 6:00 AM rather than planning the day around an exact arrival time in Chame.
Should You Stay Overnight in Besisahar?
If time is not a major concern, staying overnight in Besisahar is a good option.
It breaks the long journey into two days and gives you a more gradual transition from Kathmandu to the higher elevations of the Annapurna Circuit.
You can then continue towards Chame the following morning and start trekking from there.
If you have limited time, travelling directly to Chame makes more sense because it saves a day.
Where Should You Start the Annapurna Circuit?
Chame is a popular starting point for trekkers who want to shorten the road section and begin walking higher in the Marsyangdi Valley.
Start from Chame if you have limited time and want to get onto the trail quickly.
Start from Dharapani if you want a little more trekking and a slightly lower starting elevation.
Start from Besisahar if you have more time and want to experience more of the lower valley and changing landscapes.

If you are planning the complete route, see our Annapurna Circuit Trek for the full itinerary and current trip details.
Is Chame Too High to Reach in One Day?
Chame is at approximately 2,710 metres, so it is already high enough for altitude to become a consideration.
For most trekkers, the more important issue is not simply reaching Chame but what they do afterwards.
If you travel directly from Kathmandu to Chame, take the first evening slowly and avoid treating the next day as a hard trekking day.
If you have enough time, staying in Besisahar first gives you a more gradual progression in elevation.
Kathmandu to Chame Cost
For a private journey with MountainKick, the current price is:
NPR 45,000 per 4×4 from Kathmandu to Chame
This includes:
- Private 4×4 vehicle
- Driver
- Fuel
The price is per vehicle, not per person. MountainKick does not fill the remaining seats of a private vehicle with other travellers.
For the shared transport option, the Besisahar to Chame shared jeep is around NPR 2,500 to 3,000 per person, in addition to the cost of getting from Kathmandu to Besisahar.
What Should You Take on the Journey?
You do not need much for the drive itself, but keep your important items with you rather than putting everything in your main trekking bag.
- Water
- Snacks
- Passport and important documents
- Phone and power bank
- Small day bag
- Warm layer
- Any personal medication
The road can be bumpy after Besisahar, so keep fragile items protected.
Is Kathmandu to Chame Worth Doing in One Day?
Yes, especially if your main goal is to save time and begin the Annapurna Circuit from Chame.
The downside is that it is a long driving day. You spend most of the day on the road rather than walking.
For trekkers with limited holiday time, the direct journey makes sense. If you have more days available, breaking the journey at Besisahar is more relaxed.
Which Transport Option Is Best?
Choose a private 4×4 if you want to travel directly from Kathmandu to Chame and start trekking as soon as possible.
Choose bus and shared jeep if keeping transport costs low is your priority.
Choose a HiAce and private 4×4 combination if you are travelling with a larger group.
If you are unsure, tell us your group size and trekking dates. We can recommend the most suitable transport arrangement.
