EBC Trek in May: Weather, Crowds and What to Expect

Mar 12, 2026  ·  12 min read  ·  By Thapa Kumar

Quick Answer

May is a strong month for EBC if you target the first two weeks. The trail is snow-free at every elevation, temperatures on the lower sections are the warmest of any trekking month, and Everest Base Camp is alive with expedition teams during the peak summit window. After May 15th, pre-monsoon haze builds and Lukla flight reliability starts slipping.

MountainKick’s EBC trek starts from USD 1,160 per person. May departures use Manthali Airport in Ramechhap for the Lukla flight, requiring a 3am road transfer from Kathmandu.

May is the last good window before the monsoon shuts the Khumbu down. The Everest climbing season is at its peak, temperatures on the lower trail are the warmest of any trekking month, and teahouses are running at full capacity. Get the timing right and you have comfortable conditions, Everest in full climbing mode, and a front-row seat to the most active period on the upper mountain.

Weather and Temperatures in May

May is the warmest trekking month in the Khumbu and the last one before the monsoon arrives, typically rolling in between June 1st and 10th. Daytime temperatures at lower elevations are genuinely pleasant. The pre-monsoon atmosphere brings moisture and haze that builds through the month. Mornings tend to be clear, but afternoons cloud over quickly above 4,000m from mid-May. The first two weeks hit the sweet spot between warmth and clarity.

Early May vs Late May: What Changes

May splits into two meaningfully different windows. Which one you target makes a real difference to your experience.

Early May (1st to 14th) sits right in the middle of the Everest climbing season. Base Camp is packed with expedition teams, the Khumbu Icefall is in active use, and on clear mornings from Kala Patthar you can pick out climbers on the Lhotse Face. Morning visibility is sharp, teahouses are fully stocked, and the energy on the upper trail is unlike any other month. For most people targeting May, leaving Kathmandu between the 1st and 12th gives the best combination of conditions.

Late May (15th onwards) is a different story. The Everest summit window typically closes around the 25th and expedition teams start descending and packing up Base Camp. The trail above Namche quiets noticeably. Afternoon clouds push lower in the valley. Light rain appears below Phakding from around the 20th. Lukla flight reliability starts slipping as pre-monsoon weather tightens the morning departure window.

Trail Conditions in May

The trail is snow-free at every elevation throughout May. This is the one trekking month where you can be certain of a clear path from Lukla all the way to Kala Patthar. Microspikes are not needed at any point.

Above Dingboche from Lobuche to Gorak Shep, May offers the most comfortable high-altitude trail conditions of any trekking month. The rocky terrain has dried out from the April thaw and the footing is solid throughout. The Kala Patthar climb at 5,545m is as comfortable as it gets in the Khumbu. A pre-dawn start still calls for a down jacket and insulated gloves, but you are not dealing with the extreme cold of November or December.

The May Expedition Advantage

This is what May offers that no other trekking month can. The Everest climbing season runs from late April through late May, and in early May the mountain is as alive as it gets. At Base Camp you will find dozens of expedition teams, the Khumbu Icefall route is rigged and in active use, and on clear mornings from Kala Patthar you can make out climbers on the Lhotse Face pushing toward the South Col. The atmosphere at Gorak Shep during this window is completely unlike the October or November trekking seasons. Photographers targeting the upper mountain in active expedition mode find early May conditions that simply are not available at any other time of year.

One thing worth knowing: EBC itself has restricted trekker access during the climbing season. You can walk to the edge of the expedition area but not through it. Your guide will be across the current access situation on arrival. The view from Kala Patthar and the approach to Base Camp remains fully open throughout May.

What to Pack for a May EBC Trek

May is warmer than October or November but the upper trail above 4,000m still needs proper layering. Do not let the lower trail temperatures fool you into underpacking for the high camps.

  • Sleeping bag: -10°C to -15°C rated. A good-quality rental bag in verified condition is fine for May.
  • Down jacket: Lighter packable down (600 fill or above) for pre-dawn starts and evenings above Namche. Not needed during daytime trekking below Lobuche.
  • Base and mid layers: Lightweight moisture-wicking base layers. Mid-weight fleece for evenings and higher elevations. Breathable fabrics matter more in May than the colder months because sweat on the lower sections is real.
  • Outer shell: Lightweight waterproof jacket. Rain is possible below Namche in late May and wind protection is needed at Kala Patthar and EBC.
  • Gloves: Liner gloves for general trekking. Insulated gloves for the Kala Patthar pre-dawn push.
  • Boots: Waterproof hiking boots. Trail runners can manage the lower trail in dry early May conditions but waterproof footwear is the better call above Dingboche.
  • Microspikes: Not needed in May.
  • Sunscreen and glacier glasses: UV intensity at 5,000m is extreme and the sun is higher in May than any other trekking month. SPF 50 minimum on all exposed skin, reapplied through the day. Category 4 glacier glasses for Kala Patthar and Base Camp.
  • Insect repellent: Worth having for the Phakding to Namche section in warm May afternoons.

Lukla Flights in May

Early May has solid Lukla flight reliability, roughly on par with October. Flights run in the morning and the afternoon weather pattern rarely causes problems for morning departures in the first two weeks. From around May 18th things shift. Pre-monsoon activity causes more weather holds and in the final week, morning fog and cloud can affect the Solukhumbu valley approaches.

Build at least one buffer day in Kathmandu before any international connection for early May departures. For departures after the 15th, two buffer days is the right margin. Read our Lukla flight delays guide and our Lukla via Ramechhap guide for the full picture on how May flights are managed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is May a good month for the EBC trek?

Yes, especially the first half. Early May gives you warm trail temperatures, a snow-free route at every elevation, and an active Everest climbing season at Base Camp. Pre-monsoon haze builds through the month and afternoon clouds come in more often from mid-May, but morning visibility holds up well throughout.

How does May compare to October for EBC?

October is clearer, cooler, and more reliable for Lukla flights. It is the go-to month for first-time EBC trekkers. May is warmer, comes with the Everest climbing season atmosphere, and the trail is completely snow-free. October suits people who want clarity and reliability. May suits those who want warmth and the chance to see Everest in active expedition mode.

Can I see Everest climbers from Kala Patthar in May?

Yes, on clear mornings in early May. From Kala Patthar at 5,545m you can see the South Col route, the Yellow Band, and the Lhotse Face with the naked eye. With binoculars, climbers on the fixed lines are visible on good days between roughly May 5th and 20th depending on the season’s summit window.

Will there be snow on the trail in May?

No. May is the one trekking month when the EBC trail is reliably clear of snow at every elevation. Whatever lingered from April has melted well before May 1st. Microspikes are not needed at any point.

Do I need to book teahouses in advance in May?

In early May, yes, especially above Namche. Lobuche and Gorak Shep fill up fast in the first two weeks and walk-ins risk being turned away during peak climbing season. From mid-May onward availability loosens, but confirming the high camps in advance is still worth doing.

Are Lukla flights reliable in May?

Early May is reliable, roughly on par with October. From around May 15th the pre-monsoon pattern causes more weather holds. Build at least one buffer day before any international connection for early May departures. For late May, two buffer days is the right margin.

What permits do I need for EBC in May?

The same as any other month: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. Both are handled by your agency as standard. See our Nepal trekking permits guide for full 2026 costs.
