Taplejung is in far eastern Nepal, and it’s the main gateway for treks in the Kanchenjunga region. Unlike Everest or Annapurna, there’s no quick road or regular flight that drops you at the start of the trail.
For most trekkers the trip has two parts: a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, then a long drive to Taplejung. There’s also a direct flight to Suketar, the airport near Taplejung, but it doesn’t run often and weather can stop it.

How MountainKick Reaches the Kanchenjunga Trail
On our 21-day Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, the way in looks like this:
- Day 2: fly Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, then drive to Taplejung in 7 to 8 hours by private jeep
- Day 3: drive Taplejung to Sekathum in 3 to 4 hours, then walk for 1 to 2 hours
Taplejung is an overnight stop, not the trailhead. We carry on by 4WD to Sekathum the next morning. Road conditions on this stretch change, so we leave some slack in the plan.
Once you reach Sekathum, the trek itself begins. For the full route, permits and a day by day plan, see our Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek guide.

Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, Then Taplejung
This is the route we recommend for most Kanchenjunga trekkers.
Kathmandu to Bhadrapur by flight

The flight takes about 45 to 55 minutes. Bhadrapur is the main airport for eastern Nepal, with far more flights than Suketar. It’s in the lowlands, so it’s less affected by mountain weather.
Bhadrapur to Taplejung by road
The drive takes 7 to 8 hours by private jeep, and longer by shared jeep. It climbs from the plains through tea gardens and hill villages. The time depends on the vehicle, the road and how often you stop, so don’t plan anything for the evening you arrive.
Why most trekkers use Bhadrapur
With fixed trekking dates, Bhadrapur is the safer plan. You don’t depend on the limited Suketar flights, and there are several flights a day to choose from.
Kathmandu to Suketar by Flight

Suketar Airport is close to Taplejung, so it’s the most direct option. It saves you the long drive from Bhadrapur. But flights are few, and weather or operational problems can stop them. It’s great if a flight is running on your date, but we wouldn’t build a fixed Kanchenjunga itinerary around it without confirmation.
Kathmandu to Taplejung: Which Route Should You Choose?
- For most trekkers: fly to Bhadrapur and continue by private jeep.
- If a Suketar flight is confirmed: flying direct saves a long day on the road.
- If your trekking dates are fixed: Bhadrapur is the safer choice.
- On an organised trek: let your trekking company arrange it. The trip goes beyond Taplejung to the trailhead, and they can switch plans if a flight is cancelled.
How Much Does It Cost to Travel From Kathmandu to Taplejung?
The Kathmandu to Bhadrapur flight usually costs USD 150 to 200 one way. Fares change with the date and how early you book, and can be higher in peak season.
From Bhadrapur, a shared jeep to Taplejung is about USD 20 to 25 per person. A private 4WD is about USD 200 to 300 for the vehicle.
If you’re going on to Sekathum for the trek, there’s another jeep ride from Taplejung. The price depends on the vehicle and the road. On our Kanchenjunga Circuit, all of this transport is included in the package.
We don’t publish a fixed price for the Suketar flight, because fares on that route vary a lot. Check the fare when you book, or ask us.
| Transport | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| Kathmandu to Bhadrapur flight | USD 150 to 200 one way |
| Bhadrapur to Taplejung, shared jeep | USD 20 to 25 per person |
| Bhadrapur to Taplejung, private 4WD | USD 200 to 300 per vehicle |
| Taplejung to Sekathum | Depends on vehicle and road |
| Kathmandu to Suketar flight | Check the fare when booking |
What Happens If the Suketar Flight Is Cancelled?
Weather often affects mountain airports, and Suketar has far fewer flights than Bhadrapur. If your flight is cancelled, your airline or trekking company will need to find another option, depending on seats and road conditions. Bhadrapur is the usual backup. Expect to lose time, and don’t assume you can carry on the same day.
Returning From Kanchenjunga to Kathmandu
You come back a different way. The Kanchenjunga Circuit ends at Yamphudin on the south side. From there we leave at about 5:30am and drive 6 to 7 hours to Bhadrapur, then fly to Kathmandu.
The drive is timed for an afternoon flight, and a slow road can mean missing it. Then you’d stay a night in Bhadrapur and fly the next day. So don’t book an international flight for the morning after your trek ends.
