Hotel Everest View: The Hike From Namche Bazaar and What to Expect
Hotel Everest View is a hotel at about 3,880m above Namche Bazaar, known for its terrace view of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. Most trekkers visit on a day hike during their Namche acclimatisation day.
The climb from Namche takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and you can stop for tea or coffee on the terrace before heading back down.
- Altitude: about 3,880m, around 440m above Namche
- Hike from Namche: about 1.5 to 2.5 hours up
- Whole outing: 3 to 4 hours there and back, or 4 to 6 hours via Khumjung
- Views: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku, on clear days
- History: opened in 1971 by Japanese hotelier Takashi Miyahara, and famous for its high location and Himalayan views
- Best time of day: morning, before cloud often builds
The terrace at Hotel Everest View is one of the classic early views of Everest on the trek. It’s a short, steep climb from Namche Bazaar, and the reward is a wide view of the Khumbu’s biggest peaks over a cup of tea.
The hike is a popular choice for your Namche acclimatisation day. You climb higher during the day and return to sleep at Namche’s lower altitude. It can support gradual acclimatisation, but it doesn’t remove the risk of altitude sickness. See our Namche Bazaar guide for the rest of your time there.

The Hike From Namche
| Section | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Namche to Syangboche | 1 to 1.5 hours |
| Syangboche to Hotel Everest View | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Hotel to Khumjung | 20 to 45 minutes |
| Khumjung back to Namche | 1 to 1.5 hours |
Allow around 3 to 4 hours for the hotel visit and a direct return, or 4 to 6 hours if you continue through Khumjung and stop at the village sights. Times vary with your pace and how long you spend at the hotel.
The first part is the hardest, straight up from the top of Namche. Go slowly and breathe steadily. Above the Syangboche airstrip, the trail eases and the views open up.

The hike takes you about 440m above Namche. If you get a headache with nausea, dizziness or other worrying symptoms, stop going up and tell your guide. See our altitude sickness guide.
What You’ll See
On a clear morning, the terrace looks straight up the Khumbu valley:
- Everest (8,849m), peeking over the Nuptse ridge
- Lhotse (8,516m) and Nuptse (7,861m)
- Ama Dablam (6,812m), often the most striking peak from here
- Thamserku and Kangtega, close by to the south
- Tengboche Monastery, on a ridge far below
Clouds often build by late morning, so start early. Conditions vary by season and day.
The Khumjung Loop
Instead of going back the same way, you can walk down through Khumjung, one of the biggest Sherpa villages in the Khumbu, and back over the ridge to Namche.
- Khumjung School: established with support from Sir Edmund Hillary in 1961.
- Khumjung Monastery: the monastery displays a relic said to be a yeti scalp. Access and viewing arrangements may vary.
- The village: stone houses and potato fields, with Khumbila, the region’s sacred mountain, above.
A Sample Acclimatisation Day
- Early morning: breakfast in Namche and start the climb.
- Mid-morning: tea or coffee on the hotel terrace while the views are usually clearest.
- Late morning: walk back via Khumjung, or the way you came.
- Afternoon: rest, lunch and a slow walk around Namche.
- Evening: dinner and an early night before the walk to Tengboche.

Staying at the Hotel
Hotel Everest View has a small number of rooms, most with views towards Everest. It’s more comfortable than a teahouse, with prices to match.

We can add a night at the hotel to your trek. Per person, per night, on top of your trek price:
| Option | Extra cost |
|---|---|
| Bed and breakfast, single room | USD 204 |
| Half board (breakfast and dinner) | USD 240 |
| Full board (all meals) | USD 274 |
At about 3,880m, a night here needs to fit your trek’s overall acclimatisation plan, so we’ll build it into a sensible itinerary. Ask us when you book, and book ahead, as rooms are limited.
