Chitwan National Park: What to Expect on a Safari in Nepal
Chitwan National Park is Nepal’s best-known wildlife park, in the lowlands of southern Nepal. Most visitors stay 2 nights in Sauraha, on the park’s edge.
You can usually expect to see one-horned rhinos, deer, crocodiles and many birds. Tigers live here too, but sightings are rare. October to March is the most comfortable time to visit.
- Location: southern Nepal, around 5 to 7 hours by road from Kathmandu
- Where to stay: Sauraha, on the edge of the park
- How long: 2 nights is enough for most people
- Main activities: jeep safari, canoe ride, guided jungle walk, birdwatching
- Wildlife: one-horned rhinos, deer, crocodiles, monkeys and over 500 bird species
- Tigers: 145 recorded in the 2026 census, but rarely seen

Chitwan is the other side of Nepal. Instead of mountains and teahouses, you get grassland, forest and slow brown rivers, with rhinos grazing in the reeds.
It was Nepal’s first national park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also an easy add-on to a trek, because it’s a drive from both Kathmandu and Pokhara. Here’s what to expect.

What You’ll See in Chitwan
- One-horned rhinos: Chitwan’s most familiar large mammal. In the 2021 count, 694 rhinos were recorded in the park, buffer zone and nearby forests. Sightings are common on safari, though never guaranteed.
- Deer: spotted deer, sambar and barking deer are common.
- Crocodiles: mugger crocodiles and the rare, long-snouted gharial, often seen from the canoe.
- Monkeys: rhesus macaques and grey langurs.
- Birds: over 500 species, from kingfishers and hornbills to peacocks.
- Wild elephants, sloth bears and leopards: they live here, but you’d be lucky to see one.

Wildlife is never guaranteed. What you see depends on the season, the time of day and some luck.
Can You See a Tiger?
Nepal’s 2026 tiger census recorded 145 tigers in Chitwan, up from 128 in 2022. Even so, most visitors don’t see one. Tigers are shy, mostly active at night, and the grass can be taller than a jeep.
Your best chance is on a longer jeep safari deeper into the park, which we can arrange on request. Go hoping for rhinos and treat a tiger as a bonus.
Safari Activities Compared
| Activity | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Jeep safari | about 3 to 4 hours on our standard safari | Covering more ground and looking for larger mammals |
| Canoe ride on the Rapti River | about 1 to 1.5 hours | Crocodiles, birds and riverside wildlife |
| Guided jungle walk | about 3 hours | Tracking signs and exploring forest and grassland on foot |
| Birdwatching | usually early morning | Bird lovers and photographers |
| Tharu village walk and cultural show | late afternoon and evening | Local culture and life on the park’s edge |

Our safari is private, so we can change it to suit you. A longer jeep safari, extra birdwatching or another night can all be added.
Elephant rides: we don’t offer elephant rides as part of our safari. Our wildlife activities focus on jeep safaris, canoe rides, guided walks and birdwatching.
Best Time to Visit Chitwan
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to November | Pleasant weather after the monsoon. The grass may still be tall, so wildlife can be harder to spot. |
| December to January | Cooler mornings and good birdwatching, with possible fog. |
| February to March | A strong all-round choice for wildlife viewing. |
| April to May | Hot. Wildlife can be easier to spot in some areas, but midday heat can be intense. |
| June to September | Monsoon rain, possible access problems and some activities limited for the season. |
How Many Nights Do You Need?
Two nights is enough for most people. It gives you a full day for the main activities, plus time for a Tharu village walk and an early birdwatching walk before you leave.
Add a third night if you’re keen on birds or want a longer jeep safari.
Getting to Chitwan
- By road: allow around 5 to 7 hours from Kathmandu. The drive from Pokhara also takes several hours, depending on the route and traffic. Our safari includes private road transfers.
- By air: a flight of about 20 to 25 minutes from Kathmandu to Bharatpur, then a road transfer to Sauraha. It’s an optional add-on to our safari, from USD 120 per person.
Chitwan fits well between Kathmandu and Pokhara, or after a trek near Pokhara. See our 2 weeks in Nepal guide for itineraries that include it.
Where to Stay
Most visitors stay in Sauraha, a small town on the Rapti River, right on the edge of the park. Lodges range from simple guesthouses to comfortable jungle resorts. On our safari, you stay in a jungle lodge in Sauraha with private bathrooms.

What It Costs
Our 3-day Chitwan National Park Safari costs from USD 350 per person for 2 to 3 people. It includes the private car from Kathmandu or Pokhara, 2 nights in a jungle lodge, all meals, park fees, and the jeep safari, canoe, jungle walk, birdwatching and Tharu cultural show.

Tips for Your Safari
- Wear neutral colours, like green, brown or khaki, and skip bright clothes.
- Bring insect repellent, especially for the evenings and the jungle walk.
- Be quiet on safari. Animals notice noisy groups long before you see them.
- Bring binoculars if you have them, especially for birds.
- Expect early starts. Animals are most active in the early morning.
- Carry water and sun protection, as it gets very hot from April.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chitwan worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you want something different from the mountains. Most visitors see rhinos, crocodiles and lots of birds in two days, though wildlife is never guaranteed.
Will I see a tiger in Chitwan?
Probably not, but it’s possible. Nepal’s 2026 census recorded 145 tigers in Chitwan, but they’re shy and mostly active at night.
How many days do I need in Chitwan?
Two nights is enough for most people. Add a third for more birdwatching or a longer jeep safari.
What’s the best month to visit Chitwan?
February and March are a strong all-round choice for wildlife. October to January is pleasant and cooler, but the grass can be taller early in the season.
Is the jungle walk safe?
A guided jungle walk involves real wildlife risks, even with experienced guides. Follow their instructions, keep your distance from animals, stay together and never approach wildlife for a photo. Your guide will decide how to respond if fresh animal signs or an encounter make it unsafe to continue.
Do you offer elephant rides?
No. We don’t offer elephant rides as part of our safari. Our wildlife activities focus on jeep safaris, canoe rides, guided walks and birdwatching.
Can I visit Chitwan after a trek?
Yes. It’s a drive from Pokhara, so it fits well after a trek in the Annapurna region.
