Chitwan National Park is Nepal’s first and most celebrated national park, covering 952 square kilometres of subtropical lowland in the Terai. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Asia’s most successful conservation zones, home to the greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, gharial and mugger crocodiles, sloth bears, and over 500 species of birds.
This 3-day trip from Kathmandu combines the park’s four core safari experiences in a single itinerary: a jeep safari deep into the forest, a canoe ride along the Rapti River, a guided jungle walk on foot, and early morning birdwatching. Beyond the wildlife, the trip includes a Tharu village tour with an ox cart ride, a Tharu cultural dance show, and a visit to the elephant breeding centre. All transport, accommodation, meals, and park permits are included.
HIGHLIGHTS
Depart Kathmandu early morning by private vehicle. The journey takes approximately 7 hours via Mugling and Narayanghat, following the Trishuli River through hilly countryside before descending to the Terai plains.
Arrive in Sauraha around midday and check in to the jungle resort. After lunch, attend a briefing on park activities and safety.
In the afternoon, join a Tharu village tour on a traditional ox cart ride through local settlements. Visit traditional mud houses and learn about the customs and way of life of the indigenous Tharu community.
In the evening, watch a Tharu cultural dance show performed by local community members, featuring traditional stick dances, folk songs, and music.
Begin early with a 90-minute canoe safari on the Rapti River. The silent river journey is ideal for spotting mugger crocodiles and gharials basking on the banks, along with kingfishers, egrets, and migratory birds.
After the canoe ride, set out on foot for a 3-hour guided walking safari through dense sal forest and grasslands. Two licensed nature guides lead the walk, tracking animal footprints and searching for one-horned rhinos, spotted deer, and wild boar.
Return to the resort for brunch and a rest period in the early afternoon.
In the afternoon, visit the elephant breeding centre to learn about Chitwan’s elephant conservation programme, followed by a 3-hour jeep safari in a 4WD vehicle with an experienced guide. The jeep reaches areas inaccessible on foot, significantly increasing the chances of encountering rhinos, sloth bears, and leopards.
Watch the sunset from the bank of the Rapti River before dinner at the resort.
Wake early for an optional 2-hour birdwatching expedition. Chitwan is home to over 500 bird species including the Bengal florican, great hornbill, lesser adjutant stork, red junglefowl, and a wide range of raptors and wetland birds.
After breakfast, enjoy a final walk in the resort garden before departure.
Board the private vehicle and return to Kathmandu by the same route, arriving in the early evening.
“A fantastic safari experience”
As a couple, we had a wonderful time in Chitwan. The jungle safari was the highlight, especially seeing rhinos in the wild and exploring the park by jeep. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the animals and the area -- MountainKick organized everything smoothly and made the whole experience very…
“Great family adventure”
Our family of four really enjoyed the Chitwan safari. The children loved the jungle activities and were especially excited when we spotted a rhino. We also enjoyed learning about local Tharu culture -- everything was well arranged by MountainKick and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
“A lovely break after trekking”
After finishing our trek, we spent a few days in Chitwan and it was the perfect change of pace. The jungle was beautiful and we saw several rhinos, monkeys, and plenty of birds -- the safari was well organized and our guide knew exactly where to look. MountainKick made the…
“More than just a wildlife trip”
Travelling with a group of five friends, we had a brilliant time in Chitwan. The wildlife was obviously the main attraction, but we also really enjoyed visiting the Tharu village and learning about local life. The whole experience felt relaxed and personal -- MountainKick were excellent to deal with and…
October, November, March, and April offer the best conditions. Temperatures are comfortable, vegetation thins after the monsoon making wildlife easier to spot, and the Rapti River is clear for canoe safaris. The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rainfall and partial park closures. Summer months are very hot and humid in the Terai lowlands.
Sightings are very common. Chitwan National Park has one of the world’s highest densities of greater one-horned rhinoceros, with over 700 individuals in the park. You will have multiple opportunities during the walking safari, canoe ride, and jeep safari.
Tiger sightings are possible but not common. Chitwan has a healthy breeding population of Bengal tigers and is one of the best places in Asia to see one in the wild. Tigers are naturally elusive and most active at dawn and dusk, so sightings depend on timing and conditions. Your guide tracks fresh signs throughout the safari to maximise your chances.
Yes. All activities take place on flat terrain and there is nothing physically strenuous on this itinerary. The jeep safari, canoe ride, and Tharu cultural show are particularly engaging for younger travellers. Children under 5 are not recommended for walking safaris in the jungle buffer zone. Let us know the ages of any children when you book so we can adjust activities accordingly.
Both. Many guests combine Chitwan with a Himalayan trek, but it is equally rewarding as a standalone wildlife trip. If you are visiting Nepal primarily for wildlife and culture rather than trekking, this is one of the most accessible and rewarding itineraries we offer.
The journey takes approximately 7 hours by private vehicle via Mugling and Narayanghat. The route follows the Trishuli River for a significant stretch, passing through hilly countryside before descending to the Terai plains. We depart early morning to arrive in time for afternoon activities on Day 1.
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory for participation in national park activities, including walking safaris. Your policy should cover medical evacuation and emergency repatriation.
Neutral-coloured, lightweight clothing in khaki, olive, or brown tones is recommended. Bright colours and white should be avoided. Closed-toe walking shoes with good grip are essential for the walking safari. A light layer is useful for early morning activities between October and March when temperatures in the Terai can be cool before sunrise.
Yes. We can arrange additional nights at the jungle resort and include activities such as community homestays, longer jeep safaris, or visits to nearby wetland areas. Let us know when you enquire and we will include extended options in your quote.
