Detailed itinerary

Arrival in Kathmandu - First Glimpse of Nepal's Spiritual Heart

Your Nepal adventure begins upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After completing immigration formalities and collecting your luggage, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your local guide and transferred to your hotel. Following a brief rest and orientation about your upcoming journey, embark on your first cultural exploration.

Visit the magnificent Swayambhunath Stupa, affectionately known as the Monkey Temple, perched atop a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley. This ancient religious complex, dating back over 2,000 years, offers your first taste of Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage. Climb the 365 stone steps to reach the main stupa, where colorful prayer flags flutter in the breeze and the all-seeing eyes of Buddha gaze out over the valley. The site provides panoramic views of Kathmandu city and surrounding mountains on clear days.

Explore the various shrines, temples, and monasteries scattered around the complex while observing pilgrims spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. The resident monkeys add a playful element to this sacred space, though visitors should be cautious with food and belongings. As evening approaches, witness the lighting of butter lamps and the peaceful atmosphere that descends upon this holy site.

Return to your hotel for a traditional welcome dinner featuring authentic Nepali cuisine, including dal bhat (rice and lentils), momos (dumplings), and various curries. Your guide will brief you about the upcoming journey and answer any questions about Nepali culture and customs.

Kathmandu to Pokhara - Journey to the Lake City

Begin your day with an early breakfast before departing Kathmandu for the scenic drive to Pokhara. The 200-kilometer journey takes you through diverse landscapes, from the bustling Kathmandu Valley through terraced hillsides, traditional villages, and along the banks of the Trishuli River.

The route follows the Prithvi Highway, Nepal’s most important road connection between the capital and the western regions. Stop at Malekhu for refreshments and to observe the confluence of the Trishuli and Malekhu rivers. Continue through Mugling, a small town that serves as a junction for roads leading to different parts of Nepal.

As you ascend into the hills, notice the changing vegetation and architecture. Traditional Nepali houses with slate roofs dot the landscape, and terraced fields showcase the ingenuity of local farmers. The road winds through several small towns including Dumre and Damauli, each offering glimpses into rural Nepali life.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, check into your lakeside hotel and take time to relax after the long journey. In the late afternoon, enjoy a leisurely walk along Phewa Lake’s shoreline. The lake’s calm waters reflect the surrounding hills and, on clear days, the magnificent Annapurna range. Visit the colorful boats moored along the shore and perhaps take a short boat ride to the Tal Barahi Temple, situated on a small island in the lake.

Explore Lakeside (Baidam), Pokhara’s tourist hub, with its numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops selling trekking gear and local handicrafts. The relaxed atmosphere provides a perfect contrast to Kathmandu’s hustle and bustle. End your day with dinner at a lakeside restaurant, enjoying the peaceful ambiance and mountain views.

    Sarangkot Sunrise and Pokhara Exploration

Rise early for one of Nepal’s most spectacular experiences – sunrise over the Himalayas from Sarangkot viewpoint. Depart your hotel at 5:00 AM for the 30-minute drive up winding mountain roads to reach this famous vantage point at 1,592 meters elevation.

As dawn breaks, witness the gradual illumination of the Annapurna range, including Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the distinctive fishtail peak of Machapuchare (6,993m). The mountains appear to glow golden-pink in the early morning light, creating an unforgettable spectacle. On exceptionally clear days, you might even glimpse Dhaulagiri (8,167m) in the distance.

After capturing this magical moment and enjoying hot tea or coffee from local vendors, return to Pokhara for breakfast at your hotel. Spend the rest of the morning exploring Pokhara’s cultural and natural attractions.

Visit Devi’s Fall (Patale Chhango), where the Pardi Khola stream disappears into an underground tunnel. The waterfall is particularly impressive during monsoon season when water levels are high. Adjacent to the falls, explore Gupteshwor Cave, a sacred limestone cave containing a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Continue to the International Mountain Museum, which showcases the history, culture, and biodiversity of the Himalayas. The museum features exhibits on famous mountaineers, traditional mountain cultures, and the geology of the world’s highest peaks. Learn about the flora and fauna of the Himalayan region and the challenges faced by mountain communities.

In the afternoon, visit the World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa), built by Japanese Buddhist monks on a hilltop overlooking Phewa Lake. The white dome structure offers panoramic views of Pokhara Valley, the lake, and the surrounding mountains. The peaceful atmosphere and Buddhist architecture provide a serene setting for reflection and photography.

Return to Lakeside for the evening, where you can browse local shops, enjoy a massage, or simply relax by the lake. Dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant with cultural performances featuring folk dances from different ethnic groups of Nepal.

Pokhara to Lumbini - Journey to Buddha's Birthplace

After breakfast, begin your journey to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha and one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists worldwide. The drive takes you from the hills of Pokhara down to the flat Terai plains, showcasing Nepal’s diverse geography and ecosystems.

The route initially follows the Siddhartha Highway, passing through Tansen (Palpa), a charming hilltop town known for its traditional Newari architecture and metalwork. Stop here for lunch and a brief exploration of the old bazaar, where you can observe local craftsmen creating traditional dhaka cloth and metal items.

Continue descending through changing landscapes as you enter the Terai region. The terrain becomes flatter, and the vegetation shifts to subtropical species. Pass through agricultural areas where farmers grow rice, wheat, sugarcane, and mustard in vast fields. Small villages along the route provide glimpses into the daily life of Terai communities, including the Tharu people, indigenous to this region.

Upon arrival in Lumbini, check into your hotel and take time to rest. In the late afternoon, make your first visit to the sacred Lumbini Garden. Enter through the main gate and walk along the peaceful pathways lined with trees and flowering plants. The atmosphere here is one of profound tranquility, befitting the birthplace of the “Light of Asia.”

Visit the Maya Devi Temple, built over the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama (later Buddha) in 623 BCE. The temple houses the famous marker stone and the nativity sculpture depicting the birth scene. Observe pilgrims from around the world paying their respects and offering prayers.

Explore the sacred pond where Queen Maya Devi is said to have bathed before giving birth, and where the newborn Buddha received his first bath. The Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE, stands as testimony to the historical significance of this site.

End your day with meditation or quiet reflection in the peaceful gardens as the sun sets over this sacred landscape.

Lumbini Exploration and Journey to Chitwan

Begin your day with an early morning visit to the Lumbini Museum, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts, manuscripts, and exhibits related to Buddha’s life and the spread of Buddhism. The museum provides valuable context for understanding the historical and cultural significance of Lumbini.

Explore the Lumbini Monastic Zone, where various countries have built temples and monasteries representing different Buddhist traditions. Visit the Myanmar Golden Temple with its distinctive golden spires, the elegant Thai Temple with traditional architecture, and the striking modern designs of temples built by other Buddhist nations. Each structure reflects the unique artistic and architectural traditions of its sponsoring country while maintaining the peaceful atmosphere of the sacred site.

Walk or cycle through the greater Lumbini area, visiting the Eternal Peace Flame and the World Peace Bell. These modern additions to the ancient site symbolize the universal message of peace that Buddha’s teachings represent. The contrast between ancient ruins and contemporary monuments illustrates Buddhism’s enduring relevance.

After lunch, begin your journey to Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The drive takes you through the heart of the Terai region, passing through towns like Bhairahawa and Narayanghat. Observe the changing landscape as you approach the park area, where sal forests begin to appear alongside agricultural fields.

Upon arrival in Chitwan, check into your jungle lodge or resort. Most accommodations in Chitwan are designed to blend with the natural environment, featuring traditional architecture and eco-friendly practices. Attend an orientation session about the park’s wildlife, safety guidelines, and the activities planned for the following day.

In the evening, visit a local Tharu village to learn about the indigenous culture of the Terai region. The Tharu people have lived in harmony with the forest environment for centuries, developing unique traditions, art forms, and sustainable practices. Full Day Chitwan Wildlife Safari

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle and prepare for an exciting day of wildlife exploration in Chitwan National Park. This 932-square-kilometer protected area is home to over 68 mammal species, 544 bird species, and numerous reptiles and amphibians.

Begin with an early morning elephant safari, riding atop these gentle giants as they navigate through tall grasslands and dense forests. Elephants can access areas unreachable by vehicles, providing unique opportunities to spot wildlife. Your experienced mahout (elephant driver) and naturalist guide will help identify various species and explain their behaviors.

Search for the park’s most famous resident, the one-horned rhinoceros. Chitwan hosts one of the world’s largest populations of this endangered species, and sightings are quite common. Observe these magnificent creatures as they graze in grasslands or wallow in muddy pools. Other mammals you might encounter include spotted deer, sambar deer, wild boar, langur monkeys, and if you’re fortunate, the elusive Bengal tiger or leopard.

After breakfast, embark on a canoe ride along the Rapti River. The dugout canoes glide silently through the water, allowing close observation of aquatic birds and reptiles. Spot various species of kingfishers, herons, egrets, and cormorants along the riverbanks. Keep watch for the gharial crocodile, a critically endangered species with a distinctive long, narrow snout, and the more common mugger crocodile.

Following the canoe ride, take a nature walk through the jungle with an experienced guide. This walking safari provides opportunities to observe smaller wildlife, learn about medicinal plants, and understand the complex ecosystem of the Terai forests. Your guide will point out animal tracks, explain the interdependence of various species, and share knowledge about traditional uses of forest resources.

In the afternoon, visit the Elephant Breeding Center, where you can learn about conservation efforts to protect Asian elephants. Observe baby elephants playing with their mothers and understand the challenges facing elephant populations in Nepal.

Conclude your day with a visit to the Gharial Breeding Center, dedicated to conserving the critically endangered gharial crocodile. Learn about breeding programs and conservation efforts while observing these unique reptiles up close.

Evening brings another cultural experience with a traditional Nepali cultural show featuring dances from various ethnic groups, including Tamang, Gurung, and Newar communities.

Early morning is the best time for bird watching when many species are most active. Your guide will help identify various birds and explain their ecological roles.

Visit the park’s visitor center to learn more about conservation efforts and the challenges facing Nepal’s wildlife. Interactive displays and documentaries provide insights into ongoing research and protection programs.

After breakfast and checking out of your accommodation, begin the journey back to Kathmandu. The drive takes you through the Terai plains and gradually ascends into the hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley. Stop for lunch en route and enjoy the changing scenery as you leave the jungle behind.

The return journey offers opportunities to observe rural life in Nepal’s heartland. Pass through small towns and villages where traditional lifestyles continue alongside modern developments. Notice the terraced fields carved into hillsides, traditional houses with red-tiled roofs, and local markets bustling with activity.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, check into your hotel and freshen up before your farewell dinner. This special evening celebration takes place at a traditional Nepali restaurant featuring authentic cuisine and cultural performances. Enjoy a multi-course meal including traditional dishes like dal bhat, gundruk (fermented leafy greens), sel roti (traditional ring-shaped bread), and various meat and vegetable curries.

The cultural program includes classical and folk dances from different regions of Nepal, traditional music performances, and sometimes mask dances representing various deities and mythological characters. As one of the core guiding principles for Mountain Kick, we always give back to the mountain community in any way we can as a means of gratitude. The people who live in the Himalayas and share their homes with us deserve to have all their little problems fixed which seem very basic for outsiders but are commonplace in rural Nepal. The people lack proper access to healthcare, sanitation and education but a little effort from travellers goes on a long way to solve these issues. Mountain Kick has made it its corporate social responsibility to help improve the living standards of the local community. We make donations to their cause, organize social campaigns and programs and also have a few trips designed to mix a little volunteer work in your holiday.
